when an artist sets the bar for themselves, it’s hard not to compare or scrutinize them for what they come up with following the brilliance of what they created prior…

artists might set that bar so high for themselves and may put a lot of pressure on themselves trying to live up to their own hype OR maybe somehow try to reinvent themselves completely going away from what made them successful. And maybe…they just want to prove that they can do more than what they did…trying to show their range and complete scope of talent. Maybe…they just wanna make what they wanna make regardless of what people expect…

whatever the case may be…it’s hard not to compare someones new work to their older…but i try to be open minded and give things a chance even if at first i don’t like it…i.e radioheads king of limbs, portisheads third.

for me, dj shadow has been extremely disappointing since the private press…and to be quite honest, it’s not due to the fact that he hasn’t been living up to the hype he involuntarily created for himself coming up with the masterpiece endtroducing, but mainly because he just hasn’t made anything that good…in my opinion of course.

here in his new album the less you know the better, it seems as if he’s trying to send a message to critics and fans, with song titles such as ‘stay the course’, ‘i’ve been trying’, ‘sad and lonely’ and ‘give me back the nights’…just to name a few, not to mention the title of the album.

I mean, he certainly was talking like he had some sort of chip on his shoulder when i saw him perform inside a giant ball at irving plaza several months ago…it was kinda sad actually. the performance was awful and gimmicky. he’s trying so hard to shed his former self, but the fact of the matter is…no one likes the new him, and he’s mad that there is little support for it…at least to my understanding. and now it seems he is trying to make everyone happy trying to redo what he has already done…more sad.

but alas, there is always at least one gem to come out of all his new work like this song here, obviously with a little help from his friends…yukimi negano of little dragon…

It’s finally here! Bastard Jazz label mate Captain Planet releases the labels first artist LP in it’s 10 years of existence and I’m really excited to spread the love…

In ‘Cookin’ Gumbo’…you won’t find any album fillers here…all 12 tracks are absolute bombs with the 12th track ‘One For Japan’ going a bit back to the labels quintessential downtempo goodness, meshed with some killer dubstep sounds, and a great way to cap off a collection of the Captains masterpieces…another personal favorite.

I first got hooked on the Captain’s music when he released ‘The Gumbo Funk EP’ on Bastard Jazz (his first). When I first heard ‘La Reina’, I nearly lost my shit…the production on this tune is just too good for words and has a groove that will make any girl channel their inner Latina…swaying hips and all…

but I’m here to tell you about what’s new…

Of course, I love every tune on the LP and always play many of them out on the rare occasions I’m djing, but this track here is my favorite of the bunch and has been one of my favorite tracks since I heard it for the first time the ‘Speakin’ Nuyorican EP’ came out…(The Captains 2nd on the label). A fine drum n bass track that takes me back to my b-boy jungle days…was even featured on an episode of HBO’s Entourage cued during a scene where Drama steals a bottle of Johnny Black as he storms out of some gig he had at some little rich girls mansion party to end the show. Not a very good description, but it was fitting…

So, without going into too much, all I can say is give the record a good listen and soak in all that eclectic, funky, soulful, energetic, worldly goodness…nothing but head bopping and booty shaking here folks…positive, fun music for everyone…

There are nights where…I just can’t sleep…and not because I ‘can’t sleep’, but because I just don’t want to…so I’m gonna write a bit about a little crush I have…

I posted a tune by Bob Marley titled ‘Send Me That Love’ back in February and had no idea the tune existed until I heard this version that Natalie Bergman did. Obviously, nothing can top Bob Marley’s original music, but her version is almost as good…it’s damn good actually.

I first came across Natalie Bergman when I heard her featured on a tune by an Ann Arbor, MI based afro-beat band called NOMO and producer Shawn Lee titled ‘Upside Down’ (which I had also posted here awhile back). I immediately fell in love with the soft sound of Natalie’s voice and needed to find more music by her…

After some digging around on the internets, I read that she happens to be the sister of NOMO’s front man Elliott Bergman…and with even more digging, I was able to find some raw recordings she did via facebook. I went through all 8 tracks and became even more infatuated with her sound, her words and the subtleness of the music backing her…and yes…she is also very easy on the eyes. If her sound and her looks weren’t enough, she also plays a beautiful guitar and can also play keys often using a vintage Wurlitzer electric piano which I looooove…

I couldn’t get enough of the music and there was no way to obtain any of it until now.

I just found out that the name of her own band is Velvette and I was able to find all the recordings on soundcloud for free download…!

I think this girl is really something special and people need to hear it. Not exactly for the rough neck, hard-ass, beat happy macho dudes out there, but I think anyone can appreciate her ‘style’ and raw talent…

Look her up…she has a few videos out there of some of her performances…I think I’ll post one…

There are so many Miles Davis tunes that I love and this is definitely one of them.

I have to pick up my trumpet again…I can’t play for the life of me, but when i’m able to produce and sustain a nice warm tone or two, there is without a doubt something magical, strong and addictive about it. It’s actually quite empowering and like the title of this tune…it’s one of the many many things that have I fallin in love with too easily…
